Demencia frontotemporal – variante conductual como diagnóstico diferencial de trastornos psiquiátricos primarios

Resumen

La demencia frontotemporal (DFT) fue descrita por Arnold Pick hace más de un siglo. Se trata de un tipo de demencia en el que predominan múltiples manifestaciones clínicas de conducta y lenguaje. Un primer subtipo, denominado demencia frontotemporal variante conductual (DFTvc) es  el más frecuente y, debido a sus variadas formas de presentación, puede ser confundido con cuadros psiquiátricos primarios como depresión, trastorno bipolar, trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo, psicosis de inicio tardío, trastornos de control de impulsos y otras patologías. En épocas recientes se ha desarrollado una importante y prometedora corriente de investigaciones clínicas, neurobiológicas y genéticas, que ofrecen fascinantes perspectivas acerca de este trastorno, el cual se constituye así, en un paradigma de las intrincadas relaciones entre neurología y psiquiatría. Esta revisión examina bibliografía reciente sobre la DFTvc, con énfasis en aspectos de su diagnóstico diferencial.
