Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) who underwent angiography at a tertiary care hospital. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective case-series study. The study included 41 patients with PAD who underwent angiography between August 2020 and September 2023. We evaluated clinical and epidemiological characteristics, the presence of risk factors, history of cardiovascular disease, indications for angiography, GLASS (Global Limb Anatomic Staging System) stages, therapeutic recommendations, and definitive management. Results: The mean age was 65 ± 11 years; 68.29% were male. Diabetes mellitus was the most frequent risk factor (87.80%), and 73.17% had at least two risk factors. A prior history of cardiovascular disease was observed in 14.63%, with cerebrovascular accident being the most common. Chronic limb-threatening ischemia was the predominant indication for angiography (75.61%). Infrapopliteal involvement predominated, with 53.66% classified as GLASS stage 4. Additionally, 60.97% exhibited GLASS stage 0 in the femoropopliteal segment. The most frequent therapeutic recommendation was medical management combined with angioplasty (43.90%), whereas the most common definitive management was medical management combined with amputation (46.34%). Conclusion: In this series of patients with PAD undergoing angiography, diabetes mellitus and chronic limb-threatening ischemia predominated. Advanced infrapopliteal disease was common, and amputation was the most frequent definitive outcome.
