Abstract

Objective: To characterize the accessory mental foramen (AMF) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective, and observational study. A sample of 147 CCT scans from 2023 was evaluated, selected from a total of 340 images from the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Service at Cayetano Heredia University in Peru. The study included scans of adult patients of both sexes with optimal images and no artifacts in the region of interest. Cases presenting cystic, neoplastic, or traumatic lesions in the mandibular region were excluded. Results: The frequency of the FMA was higher in the male group (9.68%) than in the female group (5.88%). The most common location was distoinferior (36.36%). The mean diameter of the FMA was greater on the left side (1.89 mm ± 0.46 mm) compared to the right side (1.15 mm ± 0.41 mm). The mean distance between the FMA and the alveolar ridge was 16.22 mm ± 4.81 mm, with no significant differences between sides. Meanwhile, the average distance between the FMA and the main mental foramen was 2.33 mm ± 1.41 mm, which was shorter on the left side (1.74 mm ± 0.72 mm) compared to the right side (2.67 mm ± 1.64 mm). The FMA was more prevalent on the right side, although this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions: It is concluded that the FMA had a prevalence of 7.48%. It was more common in males, predominantly located in the distoinferior position, with an average diameter of 1.42 mm, a distance from the alveolar ridge of 16.22 mm, and a distance from the mental foramen of 2.33 mm.
