Abstract

Macular edema is the first cause of reduction in visual acuity among diabetic patients. Clinical manifestations may start at any time during diabetic retinopathy development and progression and may be associated with additional comorbidities that may affect other organs as well. Diabetics with macular edema require a multidisciplinary approach. The evidence suggest that early diagnosis and prompt treatment may reduce the visual loss associated with this entity. Therefore, non-ophthalmologist attending diabetic patients may contribute to the management of this condition by early detection. The purpose of this review is to provide information on the contribution of optical coherence tomography to the diagnosis of macular edema, and to recognize tomographic biomarkers that allow to predict visual outcomes and treatment.
