Abstract

Objective:  To determine the prevalence of Pressure Ulcer (PU) in hospitalized patients from a Hospital in Lima according age, and characteristics of the population. Material and methods: Observational, cross-sectional study carried out in May 2017 in a hospital in Lima. 256 patients from emergency, medical, surgical, tropical, and trauma services were included. Nurses from the hospital’s Pressure Ulcer Committee were trained to identify and classify PUs; as well as pressure zones. Descriptive statistics were applied for statistical analysis, point prevalence of PU was calculated. Results: The population with PU was characterized by being predominantly male (21.28%), elderly (44.59) and primary level (29.49%). A prevalence of PU of 19.5% was identified. Stage II had a higher prevalence in hospitalized patients with 54% and a predominance in the sacral area with 76%. Conclusions: PUs represent a prevalent problem in the hospitalized population over 60 years of age. Nursing preventive care and consistent programs are required to avoid its appearance, taking into account the profile of the population and the areas of risk of appearance; as well as the monitoring of the care provided.
