Abstract

The objective of this review was to map the available scientific evidence on physiotherapeutic interventions for the management of shoulder pain in wheelchair basketball players. This scoping review includes studies published between 1960 and December 2024, compiling data from three databases and ten bibliographic search engines. The initial search yielded 3,631 articles, of which five met the inclusion criteria. Published between 2019 and 2023 in Italy, Spain, and Iran, these studies included between 10 and 36 wheelchair basketball players. Different physiotherapeutic approaches to shoulder pain were analyzed, with a focus on therapeutic exercise programs and strategies combined with surface electromyography. It is concluded that exercise-based interventions focusing on rotator cuff strengthening, scapular stability, and range of motion enhancement constitute a fundamental component of the physiotherapeutic approach to managing shoulder pain in wheelchair basketball players. Furthermore, the integration of technological tools, such as surface electromyography and kinematic analysis, has proven useful in optimizing and individualizing treatment for each athlete.
