Abstract

More than 110,000 people with HIV live in Peru. Among reported cases, women between the ages of 30 and 34 predominate, followed by those between the ages of 20 and 29 and 35 and 49. The most prevalent route of transmission is sexual, present in more than 90% of cases; in women, this occurs almost exclusively through heterosexual relationships. In this context, the present study examines the experience of implementing the HIV prevention intervention (SEPA+PrEP) with volunteer community health workers in Lima, promoted by the Faculty of Nursing of the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University. The objective was to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of SEPA (health, education, prevention, and self-care) integrated with PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) among community leaders in Lima. At the conclusion of the project, it became clear that there is still limited knowledge about HIV transmission and prevention among Peruvian women, as well as a need to expand the intervention on a larger scale to potentially contribute to reducing the number of new infections in the country.
