Nursing approach to the characteristics of glaucoma patients in an ophthalmology institute

Objective: To determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with glaucoma between 2018 and 2022 at an ophthalmology institute in Lima from a nursing perspective. Materials and methods: A quantitative, descriptive, and retrospective study. The probabilistic samples consisted of 383 medical records from the Glaucoma Department of the National Institute of Ophthalmology (INO). The instrument used was a data collection form created by researchers and validated using the binomial test. Results: The average age of the population was 61.92 years, with a higher prevalence among females (53.26%). Regarding clinical characteristics, 62.14% of patients had comorbid conditions, with hypertension (36.55%) and diabetes mellitus (16.97%) being the most common. Additionally, the most frequent type of glaucoma identified was primary open-angle glaucoma (58.20%). The most common signs in both eyes were redness and decreased visual acuity; the most frequent symptoms were eye pain and blurred vision. However, 89.56% had normal intraocular pressure. Conclusions: The findings showed that most patients with glaucoma belonged to the older adult population and were in poor health, which negatively affected their self-care. The importance of comprehensive and regular diagnoses is emphasized, since glaucoma can progress without obvious signs of increased eye pressure.
