Hypoglycemia in newborns has become one of the most serious challenges in global public health. It is the most common and early metabolic disorder in newborns, related to carbohydrate metabolism. Objective: To identify the effect of breastfeeding on blood glucose levels during the first hours of life in newborns from the Neonatology Department of the Regional Hospital Zacarías Correa Valdivia in Huancavelica-2023. Materials and methods: Quasi-experimental investigation, location: Neonatology Department of the Regional Hospital Zacarías Correa Valdivia in Huancavelica-2023. Participants 43 normal newborns meeting inclusion criteria. Investigator nurses, according to their shifts, received the newborns, provided care to the mother, ensuring proper breastfeeding technique, and ensuring that it was carried out successfully during the first two hours of life. Afterward, they measured glucose levels and reported the values.
Results: Euglycemia (normal blood glucose levels) was observed in 93.35% of newborns. The majority of mothers were classified as primiparous (58.14%). Apgar scores (100%) and newborn weight (81.40%) were within normal ranges. Conclusions: It was identified that there is a positive and significant effect of breastfeeding on blood glucose levels during the first hours of life in newborns from the Neonatology Department of the Regional Hospital Zacarías Correa Valdivia in Huancavelica-2023.
