Extremos de la vida: una mirada humanista del nacimiento y la muerte

La bioética actual afronta sus dilemas más complejos en los dos extremos de la vida humana: el nacimiento y la muerte. Este ensayo analiza esos extremos desde una perspectiva humanista, combinando la evidencia científica más reciente con la filosofía y la tradición artística de Occidente. Se examinan, al inicio de la vida, el estatuto moral del embrión, las tecnologías de reproducción asistida, la edición genética por medio de CRISPR-Cas9 y el manejo de embriones supernumerarios. Se enfatizan las tensiones que surgen entre la autonomía reproductiva, la justicia social y el principio de precaución. En el extremo del final de la vida, se analizan los cuidados paliativos, la limitación del esfuerzo terapéutico, el testamento vital, la muerte digna y la regulación internacional de la eutanasia y el suicidio médicamente asistido. Se propone que el arte constituye un recurso metodológico legítimo para la enseñanza y la reflexión bioética, al ser un lenguaje capaz de nombrar lo que la ciencia aún no formula.
