The 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to two researchers, Benjamin List of Germany, and David W.C. MacMillan of Scotland, for the discovery of a new form of catalysis different from that of enzymes and metals, in which using simple molecules they can selectively and at very low cost develop products that are very useful in medicine. This new form of catalysis is called “asymmetric organic biocatalysis.” The work of these researchers and their groups, one in Europe and one in the United States, shows us the importance today of basic and pure research, and therefore governments like ours should support this type of research.
