After the discovery of hepatitis B virus, which granted the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1976, it remained unknown for nearly two decades the reason why one third of patients receiving transfusions of blood products suffered a chronic hepatitis picture, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer in many cases. The then mysterious called “non-A, non-B” hepatitis was responsible for over 80% of hepatitis related to transfusions and intravenous drug use. This year 2020 and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the investigators Harvey Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles Rice deservedly received the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for having isolated and characterized the RNA virus responsible for this disease, now known as the hepatitis C virus.
