Level of knowledge on the prevention of sexual abuse in children of a Shipibo-Conibo community in Lima, Peru

Abstract

Objective: Identify the levels of knowledge about the prevention of child sexual abuse and the sociodemographic characteristics in students of the primary level of an educational institution of the Shipibo Conibo Community in Metropolitan Lima. The study was carried out between June and December 2018. Material and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study, the sample was made up of 42 students from third to sixth grade of primary school. The technique used was the survey and the instrument was the “Questionnaire on knowledge about sexual abuse for students”. Results: The level of knowledge about sexual abuse prevention that prevailed was the medium level, with 73.8 %; followed by the low level, with 14.3 %, and only 11.9 % at the high level. Conclusions: The level of knowledge on the prevention of child sexual abuse is at a medium level; however students confuse sexual abuse with physical abuse, presenting a misconception that abusers cannot be known people, that aggression occurs in distant and dark places, and that they can be identified by their physical appearance.
