Las estampillas o sellos de correos aparecen en 1840, como comprobante del pago efectuado por el remitente de la correspondencia. Llevan impresas diferentes gráficos, que incluyen imágenes geográficas, efigies de personajes, arte, representaciones culturales, arquitectura local, fauna y flora regional y local. La filatelia es el estudio de los sellos de correos y su uso postal, así como de todo material usado en los sistemas de envío de correo. Cuenta con especialidades, como la filatelia temática, que implica coleccionar estampillas y material filatélico con un tema en común, como la temática de medicina, que incluye a las pandemias y endemias.
