Objective: To determine if life satisfaction and civic participation are predictors of nursing students' attitudes toward older adults. Material and Methods: Study with a quantitative, descriptive, correlational approach in a sample of 588 nursing students from six universities from the Coast, Sierra and Jungle of Peru; A survey was applied with the SWLS, CCPC and KOGAN scales, which had a reliability of 0.89, 0.70, 0.92 respectively. Results: The average age was 23 (±5.9) years, 82.7% were women, 41.7% reside in the Sierra, 31.5% in the Jungle and 26.9% on the Coast; in 40.5% of households there is at least one family member over 60 years old, 72.6% of students presented a high degree of satisfaction with life, and 78.4% showed positive attitudes towards older adults.
In the three regions, life satisfaction and civic participation explain the attitude of the nursing student towards the elderly. The regression models show a medium effect for the Coast and Jungle regions, and a large negative effect for the Sierra (ƒ2 > 0.35) when predicting attitudes. The students from the jungle, or those over 26 years of age, presented a greater positive attitude towards the elderly. Conclusions: 1 in 4 nursing students suffer from ageism, and they have low satisfaction with their own life, reside in the Sierra and do not participate in solving problems that concern their community.
