Abstract

It has been studied 200 women during the first, second, and third trimester of pregnancy, puerperium and in non pregnant natives from sea level and high altitude, with respect to severity of gingivitis. All subjects studied had a Soft Plaque Index described by Sillnes and Loe lower or equal than 0.5 at the time of examination. It was observed gingivitis in all subjects studied. Subjects at high altitude had lower degrees of gingivitis than those at sea level. Severity of gingivitis increased with progression of pregnancy, but decreased after parturition at both levels of altitude.
