Abstract

Life at high altitude means to be submitted to an environment where hypoxia and low barometric pressure are prevalent. In such circunstance, living organisms must to respond in differents forms aimed to obtain an adaptation. to this hypoxic environment. These responses may vary according to magnitude of hypoxia. The study of the physiology at high altitude. made by cleaver peruvian scientists is one of the most important fields for investigation in Peru during the last 50. years. The present review has been carried out to resu- me studies related to endocrinology of natives at high altitude performed by national and international researchers, and it is attempted to explain as possible, the differences observed with endocrinology of natives at sea level. Results demonstrate that there are endocrine differences in natives at high altitude which are related mainly to intermediate metabolism and reproduction.
